In a normal year, cold and flu season is an important time to pay attention to cleaning and disinfecting. And, for any public space, it is even more important during a global pandemic. If you frequent an office, gym, school or restaurant, you want to know it is germ free. And in 2020, you have probably learned more than you ever thought you could about keeping a surface germ-free. There are many regimens that can promote a healthy and safe environment.
Be Prepared for Cold and Flu Season
Before you disinfect, complete your traditional cleaning procedures.
A surface must first be free of oils and debris in order for a disinfectant to kill a virus or bacteria. If the surface is not cleaned first, the disinfectant cannot do its job effectively.
Focus on high touch-point areas.
Door handles, countertops, handrails, elevator buttons and faucets should be cleaned more frequently than surfaces that are not touched frequently.
Clean more often.
During the colder months, you should disinfect surfaces more often. Be sure to use the appropriate EPA–registered chemicals and adhere to manufacturer guidelines.
Don’t just clean.
Proper cleaning and disinfecting is effective in reducing the spread of disease. But, it is not the most important part of prevention. Remind your employees and customers of CDC guidelines:
- Avoid contact with people who are sick
- If sick, limit contact with others
- Cover your sneezes and coughs
- Use proper handwashing techniques
- Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
